Raising awareness and Supporting Mental Health

Intercommunity joins Kissy Mental Health Hospital and other organizations in Freetown to celebrate the World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2021. In 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) established 10th October as World Mental Health Day to raise awareness of mental health and advocate for access to quality services for people with mental health issues around the world. The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day is “Mental Health in an Unequal World” which underlines the need to address stigma, discrimination, inadequate mental health services, and human rights violations in the mental health sector worldwide.

Mental illness and addictions affect thousands of Sierra Leoneans. People from impoverished communities and those living in poverty are disproportionately affected by mental health issues or challenges. The impacts and suffering are felt by family members, parents, partners, children, caregivers, friends, and the communities. As a society and organizations, we need to address the many concerns relating to mental illness and addictions such as stigma, discrimination, lack of support services, lack of access to healthcare, raising awareness, etc.

Intercommunity strives to increase awareness about mental health issues and provide a range of compassionate mental health support and addiction services to save lives and improve quality of life of people with mental health issues, addiction problems and victims of disasters through case management, counselling, therapy, psychosocial support, social rehabilitation, harm reduction, information & referral, advocacy, support services, skills building, social activities, and community outreach.
